Julie Adenuga’s Best Beats 1 Radio Moments

Julie Adenuga has presented the Beats1 Radio show since 2015, interviewing a stunning array of guests throughout her time on the station. Her friendly and warm approach to the craft creates some real gems of conversations and provides an in-depth look into some of the worlds most private but incredible people.

Here are our five favourite interviews she has conducted over the years...

Stormzy interview, 2017

Julie’s interview with “The Most Moisturised Man In The World” in 2017 was pre-GSAP, giving us an amazing insight into the process and meaning behind his defininitive debut album, the release of which became a seminal moment in UK Rap music. Hearing Stormzy setting his sights on a Grammy back then - with the knowledge of how far he’s come since, culminating in his groundbreaking Glastonbury headline show in 2019 - makes for a truly inspiring watch.

Discussing Fatherhood with brother Skepta, 2019

Julie bringing up their Mum’s question in the intro had us in stitches (and still does). This interview is special because it provides a rare look into the family life of the Adenugas (whose uniquely impressive line-up includes not just Julie and Skepta, but grime icon and Boy Better Know founder JME too), and the influence their parents had on them as people and in shaping their love of music. Skepta talking passionately about becoming a father is a real moment too.

Chatting to Jorja Smith, 2017

We love this one because it’s hosted in a house in between the pairs’ homes - over a humble cup of tea. Again, Julie has a wonderful way of encouraging the interviewee to speak freely and in plenty of detail. Jorja talks deeply on her private space, how she’d like to chat with Amy Winehouse if she were still with us, and how ‘Lost & Found’ is an apt title for her album as it’s how she feels on a day-to-day basis. A must-watch for any fan of this amazing artist.

Slowthai - ‘Nothing Great About Britain’, 2019

Slowthai talks about crying over an Egg & Spoon race, and being consoled by Stevie Wonder and a bubble bath (among other random hilarious and insightful stuff). Not overly sure anybody but Julie could get somebody to talk about that freely on radio to be honest - this is why we love her Beats 1 show! He also chats about his amazing, politically charged debut album, which we are also huge fans of. An intriguing and entertaining window into the mind of one of country’s finest rappers.

Billie Eilish - ‘Up Next’, 2017

So if Billie Eilish could pick anyone to play her in a movie, it would be Steve Carrell...This interview was conducted during a month where the LA-born-and-bred singer was made Apple Music’s ‘Up Next’ artist - since then, she’s gone on to conquer the globe. Julie digs deep into Billie’s childhood, her love of travel, and how home-schooling allowed her to express herself fully at any time she desired. Eilish talking about the writing process, a collaboration with her brother, is a fascinating insight into how she created the music that has made her so loved across the world.
