5 Comedians Who Have Kept Us Laughing In Lockdown

Coronavirus has dramatically changed our lifestyles, make no mistake. We haven’t seen much of each other in person, but instead have thrown ourselves into virtual existence, with an overkill of Zoom calls and quizzes.

One impact of lockdown – an unfortunate side effect or necessary social tool, depending on how you look at it – has been a big spike in screen time on our phones. Some accounts on Twitter even show an increase of 200%, three times as much traffic as they had back in March.

With people’s physical movements restricted, smartphones have been the main way to socialise and amuse ourselves. We’ve definitely been in digital overload, there’s been so much content to consume during Covid times.

There have been various entertainment waves and trends over the last three months, some from unlikely sources (e.g. Swarmz and Tory Lanez). But the conventional source for a laugh is a comedian – so here are our Top 5 to have delivered some brilliant lockdown content.

1. Amelia Dimoldenberg

Amelia (aka Chicken Shop Date) is a familiar face at S&C. She has interviewed practically everyone in the industry, from Maya Jama to Aitch, and racked up millions of views on YouTube. Despite all her favourite date spots being shut, she wasn’t going to let the lockdown stop her from hooking up with another legend in the game Mike Skinner, who was due to return to S&C this year. The pair seemed to have a sort of weird dry chemistry, which made for  a very entertaining watch. Check it out here.

2. Michael Dapaah

Big Shaq (aka Roadman Shaq aka MC Quakez) has, like many of us over this period, taken to Tik Tok. He took part in the Don’t Rush Challenge, which was set to feature an all-star line up of  Idris Elba, Michael B Jordan, Stormzy & Tory Lanez. Check it out yourself here!

3. Mo Gilligan

Mo the comedian has probably had one of the best 2020s out there. He appeared on Celebrity British Bake off and Celebrity Gogglebox, and also announced his Channel 4 Lockdown show! He has also delivered on social media. The most notable contributions for us have been when his roadman character featured on Britain’s Got Talent and Match of the Day. This genius bit of editing combined with his natural comical talent makes Mo one of the best in the game.

4. Munya Chawawa

Munya Chawawa (aka Unknown P) has also made fantastic use of green scenes to deliver some incredible content over lockdown. His sketches as a BBC news reporter covering the protests were particularly engaging and have deservedly gone viral!

5. Harry Pinero

Now Harry has actually been relatively quiet over lockdown, but he’s had a very good reason to: Harry and his girlfriend Miraa May recently had a baby boy. Harry is a good friend of ours, having done plenty of hilarious interviews at S&C – so we wanted to save the last spot here to say a massive congratulations to him, and wish all the best for his family in the future. He’ll be back with us in 2021 for more of this jokes content.
