The OFFICIAL Strawberries & Creem MOBOs rundown
Yes! It is officially time to start getting excited for UK black music’s event of the year. Our friends at MOBO are getting ready to host the crème de la crème of black music in just a few days’ time and we absolutely cannot wait.
In celebration of the big night, we’ve decided to do a rundown of this year’s acts and nominees...
Who’s Nominated?
We’re not going to go through all the categories – but here are a few of the headline groups and who we think might/deserves to win…
Best Male
Bugzy Malone
Chip
Dave
Giggs
J Hus
Maleek Berry
Mostack
Sampha
Skepta
Stormzy
This is a tough one! So many huge names on the list to choose from. Stormzy released his epic GSAP since the last MOBOs – is that enough to take this category? What about Giggs and 'Landlord'?
For us, we’re rooting for J Hus. Maybe because he absolutely shutdown our main stage last year, probably just because he’s awesome though.
Best Female
Emeli Sandé
Jessie Ware
Jorja Smith
Lady Leshurr
Little Simz
Mabel
Nadia Rose
NAO
Ray BLK
Stefflon Don
Another absolute nightmare for the judges – so many strong and talented women in this category with such varied styles. How you do measure Emeli Sandé against Stefflon Don?
We’re going for Nadia Rose in this one, though. Nadia did our launch party in January and she was ace, so there.
Best Newcomer
Dave
Jorja Smith
Kojo Funds
Lotto Boyzz
Loyle Carner
Mabel
Mist
Not3s
Stefflon Don
Yxng Bane
This is the category that gets people talking. The MOBO Best Newcomer tends to go on to have a huge career in UK music. The smart money would probably be on Dave as he has been killing it this year.
For us? We reckon Mist is one to watch…
best International Act
Cardi B
DJ Khaled
Drake
Jay Z
Kendrick Lamar
Migos
Solange Knowles
SZA
Travis Scott
Wizkid
What a year this has been for Cardi B. Bodak Yellow went triple platinum this morning (yes, triple!) and we reckon she’ll be able to buy herself a whole wardrobe of red-bottoms. In the last year, however, Kendrick release DAMN, Jay Z dropped 4:44, and Migos have branded themselves firmly into the scene.
But we’re going with DJ Khaled on this one. Only he could shout his name over a track like he does and it deserves our respect. Probably.

So there you have it! A quick look at some of the nominees for this year’s awards. We can’t wait to find out the winners (and host a few of them at this year’s Strawberries and Creem…).
