Dave: 'We're All Alone In This Together' – Review
Words by Sarah Opokiti (@sarahh_ade)
Critically-acclaimed UK rapper and scene champion Dave has released his highly-anticipated sophomore album We’re All All In This Together – and it is above and beyond what anyone (apart from the man himself) could have ever expected.
From sharing some of his most vulnerable and intimate moments, to giving us some absolute summer bangers and future anthems – this album will embark you on a journey through Dave’s dark experiences, inner thoughts and musical genius…
“An intuitively-constructed masterpiece…”
South London rapper, producer and musical prodigy Dave has given us the album we have all been waiting for – following up on his 2019 Mercury and Brit Award-winning, platinum-selling album PSYCHODRAMA.
This 12-track album further marks Dave as one of the greatest of his generation – as he poetically articulates his emotions, experiences of racism and migration on Three Rivers; his relationships with his mother on Heart Attack; friends and romantic partners on Both Sides of A Smile (featuring James Blake), all whilst conveying a message of hope and prosperity.
The hour-long album is an intuitively-constructed masterpiece of mind-blowing tracks – complete with exciting features from some of our favourite big names including Stormzy, Wizkid, Snoh Aalegra, Fredo, James Blake, Boj, Sha Simone, Meekz and Giggs.
His flagship track Clash – featuring UK’s rap icon Stormzy – was released as a lead single before the album, and has built up anticipation for the new project. The track celebrates the finer things in life with a bouncy flow on a kind of sinister and nearly grime-like soundscape.
“Dave’s versatility is second to none…”
On this album, Dave has reiterated his prowess in UK rap and tapped into sounds that he hasn’t done much of too – reinforcing the fact that his versatility is second to none, whilst still maintaining his root style of storytelling, conscious rap that he is widely celebrated for.
It’s safe to say that System (feat Wizkid) and Lazarus (feat Boj) are the two summer bangers we didn’t know we needed, but are eternally grateful for. Both songs are beautifully fused with smooth Afrobeats sounds, alluding to Dave’s Nigerian heritage. The vibes are impeccable – perfect for summer festivities.
In The Fire was definitely a collaboration in which everyone understood the assignment. Fredo, Ghetts, Giggs, Meekz and Dave all delivered and held their own one after the other. On things we love to see, this collab is right up there.
It is safe to say that Dave is back with new bangers and an incredible LP that we will keep talking about and listening to for a long time. Let us know what your favourite tracks are on the album in the comments/shout us on our socials!
